WALKING to raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

This October, I am taking part in The Great British Dog Walk (I will sometimes be joining a friend with their dog but sometimes will have an imaginary dog). Normally I swim and hate walking, so it is a challenge. My aim is to walk a total of 15km (10 miles) in the month of October which is a big increase in walking for me!

Every mile I walk, and every pound I raise, will help train more life-changing hearing dogs for deaf people.

Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated.

It costs £25,000 to fully train a hearing dog, so by taking part in The Great British Dog Walk, we are helping to raise funds to train more dogs. Any donation, however large or small, will really help.

Thank you.

My Updates

Nearly last walk

Wednesday 29th Oct
Thought today might be my last walk. I walked 2.13km (1.32 miles). This brings my total to 15.56km which was my aim but if converted to miles is 9.67miles so a bit less than 10. I feel I should do one more little amble to get to the imperial measurment right too.
Today's "not a dog" walking companion was squirrel (or maybe more than one). Didn't exactly walk, more dashed, climed and ate but quite cute.

Walk with an actual dog!

Saturday 25th Oct
Today walked with a dog but as it is near Halloween, he was disguised as a bat. He did more sniffing than walking really but we did cover 2.46km (1.53 miles). Total up to 13.43 km, so not too far to go.

Longest Walk Yet

Sunday 19th Oct
Today I was determined to walk 2km. There was a light rain which I found helped! It felt a very long way and when I got home I realised why - I though my watch was reading kms but it was actually miles, so I walked 3km not 2km.
My total distance walked is now 10.97km.
Today's "not a dog" was swimming (again)

Half way through & just a little walk today

Thursday 16th Oct
Only a brief walk this evening around the local streets, giving an interesting looping pattern but no "not a dog" companion. Not walked for a while, so hopefully time to get some more "miles" in over the weekend, perhaps after a swim with a lure of a Greggs sausage roll (other suasage rolls are available).

Third of the way through October - 4th Walk

Saturday 11th Oct
Dog walk 4. Started by discovering an Oktoberfest in the park but resisted and walked around the pond.
Today's "not a dog" companion was swimming but was allowed as today I was reminded by the Merlin app that today is Big Bird Day (nothing to do with the Sesame Street character, but a twice yearly bird spotting event by Cornell University) and the bird of the day was the Green winged Teal, and the companion was close.
Total so far, third of the way timewise is 6.68km.
Oh and on the way back a closer look at the Oktoberfest but queue of men in Lederhosen!

3rd walk

Tuesday 7th Oct
Different walk today (was going to Tesco's, so started watch at Tesco, did a couple of loops and stopped watch when back at Tesco). Briefly there as a non-dog (pigeon) but walked away when I rustled some leaves, so not a good travelling companion.
Total so far now 5.02km so actually a third of the way which surprises me as it is only the 7th of October. I may increase the distance if encouraged!

2nd Walk

Sunday 5th Oct
Today I went round the pond in the other direction and diverted through McKenzie Gardens. Joined by another "not a dog".
Running (not) total is 3.18km

First Walk

Thursday 2nd Oct
Day 2 of The Great British Dog Walk but my first walk. I am measuring the walks separately from any everyday walking I do. Picture below shows today's walk - I promise it is round and not in the water😆
There is a video on facebook of the "not a Dog" that joined me for a bit of the walk!
