I'm raising money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

This October, I'm taking part in The Great British Dog Walk. Every mile I walk, and every pound I raise, will help Hearing Dogs for Deaf People provide practical support services for those with hearing loss and train more life-changing hearing dogs for people that need them.

Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated.  The photo shows my wonderful sound support dog Crumpet with me resting on a hillwalk in the Spring.

The average lifetime cost of a hearing dog is £70,000. This includes breeding, training, applicant support, placement and ongoing partnership support, through to retirement and succession planning. Any donation, however large or small, will really help.

Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who supported Crumpet and me on our Great British Dog Walk, we enjoyed it so much we kept going once we'd walked 70 miles and finished on Halloween on exactly 100 miles.  Most of these extra miles were done around our home town of Cromarty, (I've added photos in the gallery).  It's been great fun, we've ended the challenge fitter than when we started, we've done new walks, revisited walks we haven't done for ages and walked our regular walks.  We've been joined by friends and family on different walks, but we also had time just to ourselves and chatted to the various people we met on the way.  We've walked in sunshine, rain and storms, but we kept walking!  Thank you Hearing Dogs for organising a great challenge and setting up social media so we've also met others virtually on the way.  Fantastic experience.

Friday 23rd Oct
Went for a lovely walk up Fyrish to complete our 70 miles.  Joined by Roger, we enjoyed autumn woods and stunning views.

13-21 October

Wednesday 21st Oct
For a few busy days we did small walks around Cromarty with the idea of a lovely autumn walk to finish.  Sadly I came down with a virus but the sun is forecast to be out tomorrow and I'm feeling better so here's to a colourful finish ...

12th October

Tuesday 13th Oct
A lovely day walking in the Rothiemurchus Forrest just south of Aviemore, first along the Beaver Trail and then around Loch an Eilein.  Great company with Kathleen, Keira and Ian.  Didn't see any beavers but did learn that Lochan Mor is where the beaver sequence in 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe' was filmed.  Crumpet was happy to find ducks, the ducks were happy to all be there when she (and other spaniels out that day) left.

10th October

Sunday 11th Oct
It rained and rained and rained, the wet variety of rain.  It didn't stop this dedicated team from clocking up another 5 miles, and made the evening by the fire even more special.

9th October

Sunday 11th Oct
We thought we'd be a bit more adventurous and try to re-create an old favorite walk that had become really overgrown.  We managed about half of the 'walk' which had turned into an assault course before admitting that the path had completely vanished into brambles, dead trees and new saplings!  We beat a retreat but will try again from the opposite end ...

7th & 8th October

Thursday 8th Oct
Both days were busy so our walking was all in Cromarty - but in such a lovely pace in great autumn weather we were very happy.

6th October

Wednesday 7th Oct
Today was busy doing other things so walks were restricted to 2 meanders around Cromarty.  In the morning we passed an interesting looking ship taking out parts to off shore wind farms and Crumpet enjoyed an evening stroll.

5th October

Monday 5th Oct
Another short walk, with friend Sheila for company, 5.4 km around the Rosehaugh estate.

4th October

Monday 5th Oct
After yesterday's long walk a gentle walk around Cromarty was called for, 3.5 miles through woods, past tree felling and along the coast on a lovely autumn day.

3rd October

Sunday 4th Oct
On day three Crumpet and I were joined by Kathleen and Keira for a walk around Forres which none of us had done before.  It turned out to have beautiful stretches through forrests, by a lochan, past an old distillery and along the river Findhorn.  Sadly these were linked by rural roads which were very busy.  Overall though we had a great time and Kiera, the black lab, loved the wet bits :-)

2nd October

Friday 2nd Oct
A beautiful autumn morning saw Crumpet, Roger and I taking a 7 kilometer walk to the top of Knockfarrel, and the remains of an iron age fort (well some fired rocks at the top!).  The weather was perfect and the lunch at the end was appreciated by all :-)

1st October

Friday 2nd Oct
Started out local with a couple of short walks around Cromarty followed by a lovely wander up the South Sutor in the late afternoon.  Crumpet enjoying the view!

Ready for the off

Thursday 1st Oct
Proud pawticipant Crumpet ready to pad 70 miles

In training ...

Sunday 27th Sep
Six days to go before the start so Crumpet, my sound support dog, and I joined Keira and her human Kathleen on a 12 kilometer training walk.  Our route was Little Conval and Meikle Conval near Dufftown, with 566 metres of ascent and in sunshine, showers and wind it proved an interesting challenge.  For Crumpet especially walking past a pheasant breeding ground challenged her spaniel nature to the limit, but once past that danger she behaved impecably :-)
