I am raising money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

Every penny I raise will help more hearing dog puppies to be trained, so that one day they can transform a deaf persons life.

Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated.

It costs £25,000 to fully train a hearing dog, so the challenge I am taking on is a great way to raise funds to train more dogs. Any donation, however large or small, will really help.

Thank you.

A grateful mum on a mission!

Hi, my name is Catherine, or Kate to most people.  I have decided to raise funds and, more importantly, raise awareness of the Hearing Dogs for deaf people organisation.  My daughter is deaf and had a hard time through school and college because she very often missed important information because the only way she could 'hear' was through lip reading.  Her hearing loss was in the softer sounds initially which meant she could not hear the s, f, h etc sounds included in everyday words.  This meant also, that her speech was only half formed and other children didn't understand what she was trying to say.  Hearing aids were not an option as they would not be sensitive enough to pick up those vital sounds without the volume being so high that the hearing aids would continuously whistle, thereby defeating the object of their use.

Speech therapy followed with my daughter and I practicing and for her to watch my lips form the words and say the complete pronunciation very close to her ear.  Now as a grown 20 something adult, she speaks as normally as you or I, is very adept at lip reading and has learnt sign language too.  Unfortunately as she has grown older, her hearing has deteriorated.  She became withdrawn and anxious about going out alone, terrified that she might not hear traffic or sirens or fire alarms.

Enter Hearing Dogs for deaf people.  My daughter applied for a hearing dog and eventually was allocated a beautiful 2 year old chocolate labrador called Gizmo!  He has turned her life around.  They go everywhere together, he adores her and she him. Her confidence has come back, she feels safe going out again and Ì as her mum, can feel relieved that Gizmo will look after and protect her from any dangers that may occur.  It is for this reason, I have decided to hold this Paws for Cake fundraiser to help other deaf people in a similar situation.  The more money we can raise, the more people we can help!

Will YOU help to raise vital funding and awareness?  Why not get your apron on and bake for your own fundraiser?

Thank you for reading  from me, my daughter and Gizmo!!!
